Faculty fellows participating in this year\u2019s institute hone their teaching skills in ways that promote integrative student learning in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<h3>DESIGNING SIGNIFICANT LEARNING EXPERIENCES<\/h3>\n<p>During the institute, Fellows engage monthly in innovative course-building to\u00a0design significant learning experiences at the course, program, department, and\/or general education level. Each of the eight sessions meets for\u00a0four-hours through either face-to-face [f-2-f] or\u00a0virtual means with teaching and learning coach, Dr. Cynthia Alby (pictured left front row). Fellows\u00a0study the literature on two of\u00a0the\u00a0following topics at each session and apply research-based methods to course (re)design:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Designing significant learning experiences<\/li>\n<li>Course design<\/li>\n<li>Authentic assessment<\/li>\n<li>Formative assessment and feedback<\/li>\n<li>Lesson design<\/li>\n<li>Student Engagement<\/li>\n<li>Warming the brain<\/li>\n<li>Improving discussion<\/li>\n<li>Flipping the classroom part 1<\/li>\n<li>Flipping the classroom part 2<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging students to prepare well for class part 1<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging students to prepare well for class part 2<\/li>\n<li>Developing intrinsically motivated students<\/li>\n<li>Classroom Assessment Techniques<\/li>\n<li>Putting it all together part 1<\/li>\n<li>Putting it all together part 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each Fellow received the following books:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fink, D. She describes her research as, \u201cscholarship of teaching and learning through scholarship of integration and application\u201d (Boyer, 1990). Her primary research question is, \u201cWhat does it look like to study the research on best practices in higher education pedagogy, make informed decisions about what to actually use, and then try to implement that amalgamation? Her goal is to explicitly examine this complexity in order to help herself and others negotiate the intricate terrain of teaching. In order to address such questions she has engaged in a systematic examination of teaching activities such as giving feedback, leading discussion, questioning, implementing formative assessments and feedback, flipping the classroom, and a host of others. Dr. Alby received her Ph.D. in language education from the University of Georgia in 1998. She is currently professor of secondary education at Georgia College, Georgia\u2019s public liberal arts institution, where she works with the Innovative Course Building Group. She has taught in the Governor\u2019s Teaching Fellows Program since 2002 after she herself became a Fellow.
