{"id":4766,"date":"2016-09-07T09:30:49","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T13:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=4766"},"modified":"2019-02-17T12:30:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T17:30:56","slug":"stetson-university-welcomes-new-international-language-instructors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2016\/09\/4766\/","title":{"rendered":"Stetson University Welcomes new International Language Instructors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stetson University has partnered with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.allex.org\">ALLEX Foundation<\/a> to establish new\u00a0Asian language courses with a goal of expanding to intermediate language courses.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4773 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Stephanie-Chung-2016.jpg\" alt=\"Stephanie Chung 2016\" width=\"216\" height=\"219\" \/>ALLEX Fellow,<strong> Stephanie Chung<\/strong>, joins Stetson University from Taiwan this year to offer Mandarin Chinese at Stetson University for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love reading, playing clarinet, and listening to stories about different cultures,\u201d said Chung.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Chung received a bachelor&#8217;s degree in music from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.A. in music in Clarinet Performance from Indiana University.<\/p>\n<p>For the second time, Stetson has attracted two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/Programs\/Fulbright-FLTA#.V89W6fkrLIU\">Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants <\/a>(FLTAs).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4772 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Heba-Khalifa-2016-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Heba Khalifa 2016\" width=\"214\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Heba-Khalifa-2016-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Heba-Khalifa-2016.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/>As an FLTA, <strong>Heba Abou-Khalifa<\/strong>, of Egypt, will teach Arabic at Stetson during academic year 2016-2017. Abou-Khalifa\u00a0will work remotely with Dr. Emad Hamdeh of Embry-Riddle University to teach Arabic class in a bimodal classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always dreamed of making the world a better place,\u201d said Abou-Khalifa. \u201cI am into social community work, thus, I have been a volunteer for different NGOs in Egypt, and I was responsible for raising people awareness regarding drugs and smoking drawbacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heba Abou-Khalifa earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in Art and Education in TEFL from Alexandria University, Egypt and a TEFL Advanced Certificate from Eton University and Notting Hill College. She has taught English to young learners and adults and worked as a TOEFL trainer after receiving a Teacher Training Certificate from the American University in Cairo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4768 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ana-Spalenza-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ana Spalenza\" width=\"198\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ana-Spalenza-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ana-Spalenza-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ana-Spalenza.jpg 852w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><strong>Ana Paula Spalenza Pereira<\/strong> from Brazil has joined Stetson in August to teach Portuguese. Pereira was born and raised in Espirito Santo, a state in the southeast region of Brazil. Pereira is working with Dr. Pamela Cappas-Toro\u2019s to offer Portuguese 101 for the first time. The course is open to all students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a young age, I have always been passionate and enthusiastic about different languages and cultures throughout the world, with a particular interest in American life,\u201d said Pereira.<br \/>\nA self-motivated learner, she achieved a high level of proficiency in English language without any substantial formal education.<\/p>\n<p>Pereira brings formal teaching experience in EFL\/ESL, where she has taught numerous English language classes to learners of various ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am enthusiastic and eager to engage with students and hopefully instill within them the openness and cultural exchange that the Fulbright program stands for,\u201d Pereira said.<\/p>\n<p>Ana Paula Spalenza Pereira earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in English Language and Literature from the Federal University of Espirito Santo \u2013 UFES.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the ALLEX and FLTA programs at Stetson University, contact <a href=\"mailto:WORLD@stetson.edu\">WORLD@stetson.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stetson University has partnered with the\u00a0ALLEX Foundation to establish new\u00a0Asian language courses with a goal of expanding to intermediate language courses.
