{"id":4804,"date":"2016-09-01T16:03:29","date_gmt":"2016-09-01T20:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=4804"},"modified":"2021-06-14T11:48:46","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T15:48:46","slug":"boyers-model-of-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2016\/09\/4804\/","title":{"rendered":"Boyer&#8217;s Model of Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4818 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boyer-300x173.png\" alt=\"boyer-300x173\" width=\"307\" height=\"177\" \/>Introduced in 1990 by <a href=\"http:\/\/education.stateuniversity.com\/pages\/1798\/Boyer-Ernest-1928-1995.html\">Ernest Boyer<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/gs630\/Spring\/Boyer.pdf\"><b> Boyer model of scholarship<\/b> <\/a>is an academic model advocating expansion of the traditional definition of scholarship and research into four types of scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>According to Boyer, traditional research, or the scholarship of discovery, had been the center of academic life. His\u00a0vision was to change the research mission of universities by introducing the idea that scholarship needed to be flexible and \u00a0broadened to include \u00a0new social and environmental challenges beyond campuses\u00a0and the realities of contemporary life.<\/p>\n<p>Boyer proposed a redefinition of\u00a0\u00a0scholarship to include these four different categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>scholarship of discovery<\/strong> that includes original research that advances knowledge;<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>scholarship of integration<\/strong> that involves synthesis of information across disciplines, across topics within a discipline, or across time;<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>scholarship of application<\/strong> (also later called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Engaged_scholarship\" title=\"Engaged scholarship\">scholarship of engagement<\/a>) that goes beyond the service duties of a faculty member to those within or outside the University and involves the rigor and application of disciplinary expertise with results that can be shared with and\/or evaluated by peers; and<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>scholarship of teaching and learning<\/strong> that the systematic study of teaching and learning processes. It differs from scholarly teaching in that it requires a format that will allow public sharing and the opportunity for application and evaluation by others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since its introduction, Boyer&#8217;s model has been embraced across higher education\u00a0with occasional refinement such as\u00a0technology enhanced learning.
