{"id":5002,"date":"2016-09-29T13:29:46","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T17:29:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=5002"},"modified":"2022-04-05T11:27:21","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T15:27:21","slug":"bif-call-for-applications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2016\/09\/5002\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Applications: Brown Innovation Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brown Center for Faculty Innovation &amp; Excellence is\u00a0pleased to announce the third\u00a0annual <em>Brown Innovation Fellows Program.<\/em>The program celebrates teacher-scholars as learners by offering dedicated time for reflection on learning and strategies to facilitate deep student learning anchored in Stetson\u2019s mission of preparing students to lead lives steeped in personal growth, intellectual development, and global citizenship. The Brown Innovation Fellows Program is made possible by generous donations from Hyatt and Cici Brown to support faculty innovation and excellence.<\/p>\n<h3>2016-2017 PROGRAM FOCUS:<br \/>\n<em>The Courage to Teach<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Higher education is undergoing a paradigm shift. \u00a0This shift is partly in response to disruptive forces, which include changing demographics of students and faculty; <a href=\"https:\/\/er.educause.edu\/articles\/2012\/3\/disrupting-ourselves-the-problem-of-learning-in-higher-education\">disruptive forces\u00a0reconceptualizing\u00a0how higher education is delivered<\/a>; and students (and families) questioning the value and relevance\u00a0of a college education. The recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/many-one\/campus-climate-report.php\">report on the climate at Stetson<\/a> highlights many of these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Engaged learning&#8221; is embraced by many institutions of liberal learning\u00a0as an antidote to these forces,\u00a0moving the classroom from a space where the professor is an objective deliverer of knowledge\u00a0to one in which student success and growth is a paramount concern. \u00a0Pa<span class=\"s1\">rker Palmer&#8217;s classic text, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span class=\"s2\">The Courage To Teach: Exploring The Inner Landscape Of A Teacher\u2019s Life<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;, offers a pathway by encouraging educators to reconsider objectivist education models where experts act as guardians of knowledge to one in which amateurs and experts become knowers working in concert to understand a subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">What Palmer proposes raises many questions &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When is this approach appropriate? When isn&#8217;t it?<\/li>\n<li>How do we give students voice in the construction of their educational experience?<\/li>\n<li>How can we develop syllabi that are inclusive of the diverse \u201clived experiences\u201d of students and professors?<\/li>\n<li>How\u00a0is faculty work changed? \u00a0Are institutions recognizing and rewarding these new roles for faculty?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellows will grapple with these questions and more\u00a0as a cohort over the course of the academic year.\u00a0In an effort to model democratic ways of knowing, the program will borrow strategies from the <a href=\"http:\/\/thatcamp.org\/about\/\">un-conference movement in digital humanities<\/a> where we collaborate to\u00a0actively create the agenda to develop\u00a0sessions that are\u00a0relevant, engaging and\u00a0respond to the\u00a0knowledge, interest and goals of participants.<\/p>\n<h6>Tentative Agenda<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>October <del>17<\/del><strong>19<\/strong>: Applications Due<br \/>\n(deadline extended)<\/li>\n<li>October 20: Award notifications made<\/li>\n<li>October 28: Gathering to establish goals, agenda and select readings\/resources and experts to visit campus.<\/li>\n<li>Monthly meetings to discuss, learn and reflect from November to March. (meeting times will be negotiated)\n<ul>\n<li>November TBD: Lunch gathering<\/li>\n<li>December 2, 2-5pm<\/li>\n<li>January 20, 2-5pm<\/li>\n<li>February 10, 2-5pm<\/li>\n<li>March 24, 2-5pm<\/li>\n<li>April 6-7: Share learning with campus and beyond\u00a0at the\u00a0Brown Fellows Symposium as part of the annual Teaching &amp; Learning Colloquium<\/li>\n<li>April 21: 2-5pm; \u00a0graduation celebration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Goals<\/strong><br \/>\nBrown Innovation Fellows will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop expertise in pedagogical student learning<\/li>\n<li>Use innovative strategies and technologies to deepen learning<\/li>\n<li>Educate the campus community on\u00a0pedagogical strategies\u00a0and student learning by participating <em>Brown Fellows Symposium\u00a0<\/em>as part of the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/conferences-colloquia-and-symposia\/sharing-excellence-colloquium\/2016-colloquium\/\">Teaching &amp; Learning Colloquium<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0April 7-8<em>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>Award Eligibility<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The program is available to any full-time faculty member who is available to participate fully during the year-long institute and at the Brown Fellows Symposium during the Teaching &amp;\u00a0Learning Colloquium in April 2016.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Benefits to Fellows<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The Brown Innovation Fellows Program will engage participants in diverse experiences to expand skill sets for designing courses that foster significant learning experiences by students. Fellows will build knowledge together as a cohort over the course of a year. In addition, each Fellow will receive a stipend of $1,000 to be issued\u00a0upon completion of the Brown Innovation Institute and submission of a reflective report on their experience.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Application Process<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>All full-time\u00a0faculty members at Stetson University are encouraged to apply. Each faculty member should submit their brief (500 word) application <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/VPFS69R\">through the online form<\/a>. \u00a0Please note that we will request support from\u00a0your chair or direct supervisor for your participation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Questions?\u00a0<\/strong>We look forward to a number of excellent applications.
