{"id":5019,"date":"2014-11-01T07:00:04","date_gmt":"2014-11-01T11:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=5019"},"modified":"2019-02-17T12:32:03","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T17:32:03","slug":"giving-voice-to-the-inner-life-kevin-quashie-and-the-sovereignty-of-quiet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2014\/11\/5019\/","title":{"rendered":"Giving Voice to the Inner Life: Kevin Quashie and the Sovereignty of Quiet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">by Josh Rust<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m a child of quiet\u201d is what Kevin Quashie said during this interview, where I first heard him discuss his book, <i>The Sovereignty of Quiet: Beyond Resistance in Black Culture<\/i>. \u00a0And so it was with some trepidation that we invited him to spend two days with hundreds of Stetson students and faculty members at both the DeLand campus and College of Law.<\/p>\n<p>In conversation, Kevin\u2019s gentle and disarming affect drew many of us beyond the scholarly, into the personal. \u00a0Audience members at the keynote leaned forward, as if they were hearing the voice of an old friend, rather than the address of a lecturer. \u00a0And many of those in attendance were, I think, touched by Kevin\u2019s reminders that we are all bearers of an inner life that remains profoundly resistant to public<span style=\"color: #000000;\">ly-assessable <\/span>expectations and stereotypes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cThe<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5028 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sovereignty-of-Quiet-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"sovereignty-of-quiet\" width=\"89\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sovereignty-of-Quiet-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Sovereignty-of-Quiet.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 89px) 100vw, 89px\" \/> inner life\u201d <\/span>he writes, <span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cis not apolitical or without social value, but neither is it determined entirely by publicness. \u00a0In fact, the interior\u2014dynamic and ravishing\u2014is a stay against the dominance of the social world; it has its own sovereignty\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Quashie\u2019s visit embodied what we hoped the Social Justice Lecture Series would accomplish\u2014it jarred us into revaluation. He\u00a0is a member of the Social Justice Lecture Series Committee at Stetson University.<\/p>\n<p>Rust conducts research\u00a0in the areas of social ontology and experimental philosophy. \u00a0Most recently, he\u00a0has been developing an account of the charismatic relationship in terms of what Weber calls \u201cabsolute trust\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rust earned a\u00a0Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California at Riverside.\u00a0 Outside of the office and classroom, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Kim, and two young
