{"id":5035,"date":"2015-01-08T07:00:57","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T12:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=5035"},"modified":"2019-02-17T12:32:01","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T17:32:01","slug":"connecting-the-dots-and-realigning-the-wheels-the-future-of-ursca-at-stetson-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2015\/01\/5035\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecting the Dots and  Realigning the Wheels:  The future of URSCA  at Stetson University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">by Jelena Petrovic<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>High-impact educational practices, mentorship, backward design, inquiry-based learning, <\/i><i>student-as-scholar, research-skill scaffold<\/i>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Sorting through the concepts that underline contemporary approaches to undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity (URSCA) was not a small task for our Stetson team at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cur.org\">Council on Undergraduate Research<\/a> Institute on Creative Inquiry in the Arts and Humanities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5052 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wordle-300x194.png\" alt=\"wordle\" width=\"361\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wordle-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wordle-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/wordle.png 812w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/>Over the course of three work-intensive days, we collaborated with colleagues from Shenandoah University to identify strategies that would promote URSCA at our respective institutions.\u00a0 Our conversations dissected the challenges of implementing ideals of interdisciplinarity across the college and departmental curricula and the need for effective structural and financial support for developing and mentoring URSCA. We also envisioned students\u2019 excitement over themed semesters, cross-departmental collaborations, pilot programs, and university-wide celebrations of their research activity.<\/p>\n<p>In the process, our team arrived at\u00a0the conclusion that the Stetson model we put into action every day in our classrooms and across two campuses truly brings the abstract language of URSCA philosophy to life. \u00a0What stands ahead for Stetson is not necessarily an invention. \u00a0Instead, we are faced with a need to create practical and sustainable practices that will connect the pieces we already have.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>enable institutional re-focusing from research activity to\u00a0<\/i><i>include research experience; and<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>provide support for creative efforts and interdisciplinary\u00a0<\/i><i style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">activity that are currently taking place at Stetson.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008000;\">About the Author<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5038 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Petrovic-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"petrovic\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/faculty\/profiles\/jelena-petrovic.php\"><strong>Jelena Petrovic<\/strong><\/a> participated in the\u00a0Council of Undergraduate Research&#8217;s Creative Inquiry in the Arts and Humanities Institute alongside Drs.
