{"id":6015,"date":"2017-02-08T17:54:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-08T22:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=6015"},"modified":"2021-06-02T12:14:29","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T16:14:29","slug":"brown-innovation-fellows-inspired-to-learn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2017\/02\/6015\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown Innovation Fellows: Inspired to Learn | Stetson Today"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Stetson University\u2019s Brown Innovation Fellows, a group of teacher-learners immersed in a yearlong journey of reflective dialogue and meaningful discussions about teaching and learning, are setting their sights high this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twelve Fellows were announced for this year\u2019s cohort in December, and they are using the inspiring and ground-breaking novel by Parker Palmer, \u201cThe Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher\u2019s Life\u201d as a transformative guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI picked the book as the framing guide for this group because it deals very effectively with an educator\u2019s identity and building community in the classroom \u2013 an important component to building classrooms that are inclusive of all learners,\u201d explained Julia Metzker, Ph.D., executive director of&nbsp;the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence. \u201cParker Palmer\u2019s book has become a classic text in this sense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"attachment_22793\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22793 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Rajni_Headshot.jpg-100x100.jpeg\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rajni Shankar-Brown<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One of this year\u2019s participants, Rajni Shankar-Brown, Ph.D., associate professor of Education, said she read Palmer\u2019s book a few years ago and found it \u201cresonated on many levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving the chance to reread the text and engage in conversations, especially on critical questions posed by Palmer, has been so rewarding,\u201d explained Shankar-Brown, also Director of Education Graduate Programs and the Jessie Ball duPont Chair of Social Justice Education. \u201cConnecting with colleagues across campus, including many dynamic faculty members who recently joined our community, has been remarkable. Our time together is a gift, particularly as we grapple together with complex pedagogical questions and issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"attachment_22794\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22794\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Brown.SharmaineJackson.jpg-100x100.jpeg\" alt=\"Sharmaine Jackson\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sharmaine Jackson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Stetson University assistant professor of Sociology, Sharmaine Jackson, Ph.D., was inspired to become a Brown Center Fellow so she could better interact with students where they are in their learning process and give them the tools to follow their dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a Fellow, I have learned from my cohort through the sharing of their successes and challenges. This space provides me with a sense of community as well as encouragement. I have learned that while we may come from different disciplines, we have much in common when it comes to the teachings we undertake,\u201d said Professor Jackson. \u201cUltimately, I hope that by being a Fellow, I will become more adept at teaching \u2018with\u2019 versus teaching \u2018to\u2019 students as they develop skills to think critically about their place and role in local communities \u2013 at the national level and as global citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"attachment_22796\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22796\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Brown.MetzkerHeadshot.jpg-100x100.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Metzker<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, the professors and their students at Stetson benefit during the Brown Innovations Fellows experience, a signature program of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/brown-center\/\">Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence<\/a> and made possible by donations from longstanding University Trustees Hyatt and Cici Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of last year\u2019s participants have done interesting things in their courses from their experience last year,\u201d said Metzker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"attachment_22795\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-22795\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Brown.hurst-matthew.jpg-100x100.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Hurst<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One example is Matt Hurst, assistant professor of Finance at Stetson, who provided an invaluable leadership role in designing an honors curriculum in the School of Business Administration as a result of his experience with the Brown Innovations Fellows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe group helps faculty members evolve and become who they want to be as educators,\u201d said Hurst. \u201cThe list of beneficiaries include the faculty themselves, the students who are exposed to more impactful learning experiences, and the university as a whole. Stetson&nbsp;has always been known for having great teachers and this program ensures that legacy will continue and grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proof of success in this year\u2019s Brown Innovation Fellows Program is already evident. The current group has developed a conference presentation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Courage to Teach: Using a Faculty Learning Community to Reframe the Role of the Professor\u201d will have a statewide audience. The Fellows are slated to showcase their presentation at the&nbsp;2017&nbsp;Sunshine&nbsp;State Teaching and Learning Conference in mid-February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am grateful to be part of this program and at a university dedicated to facilitating deep and engaged student learning,\u201d said Professor Shankar-Brown. \u201cAs I tell my students who are preparing to teach and serve as educational leaders, a commitment to reflective practice and lifelong learning is vital for professional and personal growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><u>2017 Brown Innovation Fellows<\/u><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Carol Azab, <\/strong><em>Assistant Professor of\u00a0Marketing<\/em><br><strong>Heather Edwards,<\/strong> <em>Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics<\/em><br><strong>Madison Creech<\/strong>,<em> Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Creative Arts<br><\/em><strong>Rachel Core<\/strong>, Assistant Professor of Sociology\u00a0<em>(alumna)<br><\/em><strong>Michael Eskenazi<\/strong>, <em>Assistant Professor of\u00a0Psychology<br><\/em><strong>E.
