{"id":6631,"date":"2017-04-13T12:54:30","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T16:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=6631"},"modified":"2019-02-17T13:15:15","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T18:15:15","slug":"third-annual-colloquium-a-focus-on-project-based-learning-stetson-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2017\/04\/6631\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Annual Colloquium: A Focus on Project-Based Learning | Stetson Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[This story was reprinted in its entirety from<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/2017\/04\/third-annual-colloquium-a-focus-on-project-based-learning\/\">\u00a0Stetson Today<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Stetson University\u2019s third annual Colloquium on Teaching and Learning was filled with inspiring, innovative and thought-provoking discussions and engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted on April 7 and 8 by Stetson University\u2019s Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, the event delineated innovative approaches to address real-world and complex challenges in the higher education classroom.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24066\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-24066 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Painter.270-200x133.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Painter.270-200x133.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Painter.270.jpg 270w\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Noel Painter<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Colloquium allows each of us to expand the breadth and depth of learning and scholarship, and examine how we make connections at this institution for a broad scope of learning,\u201d explained Stetson University\u2019s Executive Vice President and Provost Noel Painter, Ph.D., in his opening remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Day one of the event included interactive workshops, sharing sessions, a Brown Innovation Symposium and an experimental art reception.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s keynote speaker was Richard Vaz, Ph.D., inaugural director of Worcester Polytechnic Institute\u2019s Center for Project-Based Learning (PBL). He and his team travel the country to help other colleges and universities implement or improve Project-Based Learning on their campuses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24067\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24067 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Richard_Vaz.jpg-200x170.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Richard_Vaz.jpg-200x170.jpeg 200w, http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Richard_Vaz.jpg.jpeg 224w\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Vaz<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re talking about taking our courses and pushing the framework of theoretical education, moving students past the knowledge-based economy and preparing them for a more innovation-based environment,\u201d Vaz stated in his keynote address. \u201cYou\u2019re not just evaluating the results but the process of that project as well. It\u2019s a good class, but now it\u2019s even better as it is more project-based. Hyatt Brown, Hon. \u201992, who also serves on the SU Board of Trustees, established the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Colloquium is a signature program of the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, which was established by a generous endowment from longstanding Stetson University Trustees J. Hyatt Brown, Hon. \u201992, and his wife, Cici Brown, Hon. \u201907. The purpose of the center is to ensure active and continuous support of Stetson Faculty as life-long leaders and innovators, and to assert Stetson as a national higher education leader by modeling the University\u2019s distinct character of learning and teacher-scholar role for future faculty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Brown Center is unbelievable. It is so important for faculty development,\u201d Professor Eskenazi noted. \u201cI have other faculty friends across the country who don\u2019t have the support like I do through the Brown Center, and they are just in awe. The potential for interdisciplinary collaboration is rich work through such pedagogy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <strong>J. We wrote out a few goals and were\u00a0given an\u00a0accountability buddy. I\u2019ve been to countless conferences where I\u2019ve left\u00a0with tons of new ideas, but without plans and actual deadlines, those ideas too easily got lost in the day to day work.
