The Brown Center for Faculty Innovation & Excellence is\u00a0pleased to announce the fourth annual Brown Innovation Fellows Program.<\/em>The program celebrates teacher-scholars as learners by offering dedicated time for reflection and strategies to prepare students to lead lives steeped in personal growth, intellectual development, and global citizenship.<\/p>\n

PROGRAM FOCUS:\u00a0Inclusive Pedagogies<\/em><\/h3>\n

Like many universities, Stetson University’s mission<\/a>\u00a0 describes an aspiration to grow students into liberally educated citizens with the skills and wisdom to make positive change in their communities. This is a laudable goal, but what does it really mean?<\/p>\n

In ancient Greece, a liberally educated person was \u201cclassically\u201d trained in the liberal arts, such as grammar, rhetoric, and logic. The Yale Report of 1828 defined a prescribed curriculum “best calculated to teach the art of fixing the attention, directing the train of thought, analyzing a subject proposed for investigation; following, with accurate discrimination, the course of argument; balancing nicely the evidence presented to the judgment; awakening, elevating, and controlling the imagination; arranging, with skill, the treasures which memory gathers; rousing and guiding the powers of genius.\u201d \u00a0In both cases, this educational model was only available to men with privileged stations in society. In modern times, the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)<\/a> has lead the charge to redefine liberal education for the 21st century as “an approach to learning that empowers individuals and prepares them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change<\/a>\u201d, yet many college courses look the same as they would have 20 or 30 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Are our approaches to teaching and learning keeping pace in an education landscape where student demographics are rapidly changing? How do we fulfill\u00a0Stetson’s aspiration to\u00a0\u201cbe a diverse community of inclusive excellence<\/a>” in our classrooms?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fellows will grapple with these questions and more\u00a0as a cohort over the course of the academic year.\u00a0In an effort to model democratic ways of knowing, the program will borrow from the appreciative inquiry model<\/a> and the\u00a0un-conference movement in digital humanities<\/a>\u00a0where we collaborate to\u00a0actively create the agenda to develop\u00a0sessions that are\u00a0relevant, engaging and\u00a0respond to the\u00a0knowledge, interest and goals of participants.<\/p>\n

Application Process<\/strong><\/h6>\n

All full-time\u00a0faculty members at Stetson University are encouraged to apply. Each faculty member should submit their brief (500 word) application through the online form<\/a>. \u00a0Please note that we will request support from\u00a0your chair or direct supervisor for your participation.<\/p>\n
