Yet, all too often, these resources stay bound in the academy and are not accessible to our communities. How do we create learning environments in which students, staff, faculty, and others collaborate to tackle complex societal challenges?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3280\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image2.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"454\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image2.jpg 454w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image2-300x88.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/>There\u2019s something for everyone at the annual Colloquium on Teaching and Learning Innovation, hosted by Stetson University. The 2017 Colloquium offers two tracks for\u00a0participants to engage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>April 7<\/strong>: presenters or\u00a0participant<\/li>\n<li><strong>April 7-8<\/strong>: two-day embedded\u00a0Project-Based Learning track<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Join colleagues from across the nation for a celebration of learning excellence. Share teaching and learning innovations, gains you have made in any area of learning, present new ideas, and more.<\/p>\n<h3><b>KEYNOTE\u00a0ADDRESS<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><em>Project-based learning is an effective strategy for engaging students in authentic learning experiences that can develop a wide range of transferable skills and abilities.\u00a0 Using Worcester Polytechnic Institute\u2019s curriculum as a case study, I will describe how project-based learning can be used in and out of the major and across all four years of an undergraduate curriculum.\u00a0\u00a0 We will explore examples of projects on campus, in the local community, and around the globe.\u00a0 I will present results from a study looking at the long-term impacts of project work on alumni, and will share some lessons learned from four decades of project-based education at WPI.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wp.wpi.edu\/projectbasedlearning\/proven-pedagogy\/bernard-m-gordon-award\/richard-f-vaz\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5667 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Vaz-Photo-1-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Dr. Richard F. Vaz<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0serves as\u00a0the inaugural Director of Worcester Polytechnic Institute&#8217;s (WPI) Center for Project-Based Learning. The Center\u00a0provides support to colleges and universities looking to implement or enhance project-based learning. In his prior role as\u00a0dean of interdisciplinary and global studies, he had oversight of WPI\u2019s interdisciplinary degree requirement, the Interactive Qualifying Project.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vaz received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from WPI, and has been a member of the WPI Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty since 1984.
