Using capacious dilemmas, issues and questions to frame your course.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Workshop Goals<\/em><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>to apply intentional design principles to your course (re)design.<\/li>\n<li>identify a dilemma, issue or question to frame a course (re)design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On 22 Sep 17, Stetson faculty participated in the first workshop in a five-part course design series. \u00a0This first workshop explored the idea of using open-ended or unsolved dilemmas, issues or questions (DIQs) as an organizing principle for your course design.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&lt;&lt;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Workshop1-DIQ-Handouts.pdf\" title=\"Workshop1-DIQ-Handouts\">download the handouts<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/mzocysjbv4dj\/?utm_campaign=share&amp;utm_medium=copy&amp;rc=ex0share\">review the presentation<\/a>&gt;&gt;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>NOTE: The concepts in this series will build over each workshop. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/prezi.com\/mzocysjbv4dj\/?utm_campaign=share&amp;utm_medium=copy&amp;rc=ex0share\">prezi<\/a> will also evolve as we move through the series.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><em>Learn \u2026<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>After introductions, Julia reviewed the research and initiatives that undergird the workshop series.\u00a0 The handout contains descriptions &#8211; below you will find links for further learning.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The workshop series draws heavily from work championed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/aacu.org\">Association for American Colleges and Universities (AAC&amp;U)<\/a>.\u00a0 AAC&amp;U is the &#8220;leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality, and public standing of undergraduate liberal education.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/leap\">Liberal Education and America&#8217;s Promise (LEAP)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/value\">Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aacu.org\/leap\/essential-learning-outcomes\">Essential Learning Outcomes (ELOs)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/value-rubrics\">VALUE Rubrics:<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On Solid Ground<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/leap\/public-opinion-research\">Employer Survey &amp; Economic Trend Research<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Additional studies and projects\u00a0 &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/visible-learning.org\/\">Visible Learning (Hattie, 2009)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberalarts.wabash.edu\/\">Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education (WNS)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tilthighered.com\/\">Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a group, we reviewed some example Dilemmas, Issues and Questions (DIQs) using the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Is the D.I.Q.\u00a0 broad enough to encompass the disciplinary content and skills you intend for your students to gain?<\/li>\n<li>Is it engaging and relatable to students?<\/li>\n<li>Is it appropriately complex?<\/li>\n<li>Is it sufficiently aligned to your course goals?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>UPSHOT<\/strong>: Not all D.I.Q&#8217;s are made equal &#8211; you may need to consider a few before you find the one that BEST meets your needs.<\/p>\n<p>After reviewing an example or two, we started to think about the big ideas that got each of us interested in our discipline &#8230;\u00a0<em> and\u00a0<\/em>how we can provide a connection for students to become engaged with these ideas.<\/p>\n<p>For an example of a redesigned first-semester chemistry course, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chemistryandclimate.wordpress.com\/content\/\">https:\/\/chemistryandclimate.wordpress.com\/content\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Practice \u2026<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Before the next workshop, please complete the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify a single course you want to design or (re)design. \u00a0You can certainly go through the series thinking about all your courses but in general you\u2019ll be better prepared to do it again if you see the process through if you are working on a single course.<\/li>\n<li>Work through pages 9-11 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Workshop1-DIQ-Handouts.pdf\" title=\"Workshop1-DIQ-Handouts\">handout<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tgi.its.uiowa.edu\/\">Teaching Goals Inventory (TGI)<\/a>. \u00a0The TGI will help you identify what types of outcomes for students you MOST value. \u00a0Bring your report with you to the next workshop.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facilitator: Julia K.
