Frequent forest fires evident in mud core records from isolated wetlands in the longleaf pine sandhills of the Ocala National Forest.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Wetland organic mud can preserve records of environmental changes spanning thousands of years. Two cores recovered from separate wetlands in the Ocala National Forest provide a record of relatively stable water levels and frequent fire over the past several thousand years. What will the future bring given the context of current climate change?<\/p>\n

\"\"Benjamin Tanner, <\/em>Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Studies’ education and background begins with an anthropology degree (Florida State University), continues into Quaternary and climate studies (University of Maine), culminating in geology (University of Tennessee) — relates to how humans interact with the environment. He currently uses the tools of geology to study wetlands and how they respond to climate and environmental change. He also uses wetland deposits to elucidate past climate changes, including temperature, precipitation and sea level changes. He has involved undergraduate students in all aspects of his research and has mentored over 30 undergraduates in research experiences outside of class. Many of these experiences have led to co-authored conference presentations and a journal article publication with the students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spotlight Series<\/h4>\n

The Spotlight Series at Stetson University is a showcase of faculty research, creative inquiry, and other scholarly engagement to the campus community. Presenters are primarily recipients of grant awards through the Stetson Summer Grant Program.<\/p>\n
