{"id":8828,"date":"2018-04-27T07:55:41","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T11:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=8828"},"modified":"2020-11-10T13:53:38","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T18:53:38","slug":"2019-2021-brown-teacher-scholar-fellowship-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2018\/04\/8828\/","title":{"rendered":"2019-2021 Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellowship in Public History Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<br \/>\nApril 26, 2018<\/p>\n<p>DeLand, FL &#8211; The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/\">Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence<\/a><\/em> is pleased to announce that the 2019-2021 Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellowship has been awarded in Public History.\u00a0\u00a0Public historians are committed to representing community and group histories from a wide range of perspectives and to broadening public understandings of historical narratives.\u00a0 Thus, this project advances several of Stetson University&#8217;s strategic goals, including\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/strategic-planning\/media\/stetson-strategic-map-2014-2019.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Expand &amp; Strengthen Strategic Partnerships<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/strategic-planning\/media\/stetson-strategic-map-2014-2019.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Be a Diverse Community of Inclusive Excellence<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fellow in public history will position Stetson to support a burgeoning field of study that provides career opportunities for students where they can investigate\u00a0the past in inclusive and meaningful ways\u201d said\u00a0Rosalie Richards, associate provost for faculty development\u00a0\u201cStetson University stands in an important moment of creating new and exciting futures. As a signature program of the university, the Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellows highlight innovative and distinctive programs on our campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/faculty\/media\/emily-mieras.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Emily Mieras is associate professor of history and american studies and serves as chair of the Department of History<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The proposal for a Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Public History was spearheaded by chair of the history department, Dr. Emily Mieras in collaboration with her colleagues, Dr. Mayhill Fowler and Dr. Kimberly Reiter.\u00a0 This proposal\u00a0supports a growing curricular innovation in the Department of History with the goal of developing additional community-based public history research projects and meeting key curricular needs.\u00a0 The fellow, who will join the Stetson faculty in 2019, will collaborate with faculty to meet these goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring an expert in Public History to campus to share their knowledge with our students and with us. This concentration has already had wide appeal, and the fellow&#8217;s expertise will help us develop new courses and applied research projects, not only for our majors, but for any students interested in how history emerges in public spaces and cultural conversations, &#8221; Mieras said.<\/p>\n<p>The Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellowship prepares Teacher-Scholars who\u00a0 aspire to excellence in undergraduate learning, teaching, and research at liberal arts universities.
