{"id":9179,"date":"2018-08-21T10:31:14","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T14:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/?p=9179"},"modified":"2022-06-27T12:23:23","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T16:23:23","slug":"new-faculty-include-brown-fellows-in-health-sciences-sustainable-food-systems-stetson-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2018\/08\/9179\/","title":{"rendered":"New Faculty include Brown Fellows in Health Sciences, Sustainable Food Systems | Stetson Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>[This story was reprinted in its entirety from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/2018\/08\/new-faculty-include-brown-fellows-in-health-sciences-sustainable-food-systems\/\">Stetson Today<\/a>]\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brown Teacher-Scholar Kirk Roberson knows a way for Stetson students majoring in Health Sciences to easily get hands-on, practical experience right on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32678\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-32678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Kirk-Roberson-Stetson-Headshot-200x165.jpeg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Kirk-Roberson-Stetson-Headshot-200x165.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Kirk-Roberson-Stetson-Headshot.jpeg 237w\" alt=\"portrait outside with coastline behind him\" width=\"148\" height=\"122\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kirk Roberson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Roberson, Ph.D., will join the faculty for Fall Semester 2018 as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/about\/the-stetson-teacher-scholar\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Brown Visiting Teacher-Scholar Fellow<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in a new interdisciplinary program between the Department of Health Sciences and Stetson\u2019s Wellness and Recreation department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pairing the two departments is \u201ca perfect match\u201d for students in\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">Health Sciences<\/span>, who, in addition to seeking careers as physicians, physical and occupational therapists, and other medical professionals, could expand their career options to such things as exercise physiology and sports management, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs far as the Health Sciences Department being paired with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/administration\/wellness-and-recreation\/index.php\"><span class=\"s2\">Wellness and Recreation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Center, this is the first time that they\u2019ve had this position in this capacity,\u201d said Roberson, who earned his doctorate in exercise physiology from the University of Miami in May and was named its \u201cOutstanding Doctoral Student of the Year\u201d for 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Wellness and Recreation Center has many opportunities for students to start working with either community citizens or in some cases even patients who are referred to start an exercise program. \u2026 It gives them an opportunity to start getting real-world experience that they otherwise wouldn\u2019t get without a good interdisciplinary relationship between the two departments,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Roberson will be working with the Wellness and Recreation Center to develop a new community-based fitness assessment program. This program will provide students with the opportunity to interact directly with members of the community, and have a positive impact on the overall health and wellness of local citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Roberson is among the 17 new faculty members who will start work at Stetson University for the 2018-19 academic year. One of these fellowships is dedicated to STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The fellowships are funded through a generous endowment from longtime Stetson Trustees Cici and Hyatt Brown and support a \u201cniche area of expertise\u201d that brings a cross-disciplinary approach to the university, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/\"><span class=\"s2\">the Brown Center website<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22796\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-22796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Brown.MetzkerHeadshot.jpg.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"171\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julia Metzker<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is the first time we\u2019ve had a program between an academic department and a nonacademic program,\u201d Metzker said, referring to Roberson\u2019s position within the Department of Health Sciences and the Wellness and Recreation Center. \u201cWe\u2019d like to encourage more of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Every year, academic departments submit\u00a0proposals\u00a0between November and March, and these go to a committee for competitive review. Awards are announced in May, followed by a yearlong search process that culminates with the fellows starting the next academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Last spring, the Brown Center awarded a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/2018\/04\/8828\/\"><span class=\"s3\">2019-2021 Brown Teacher-Scholar Fellowship in Public History<\/span><\/a>, through a request spearheaded by the chair of the History Department, Emily Mieras, Ph.D., in collaboration with her colleagues, Mayhill Fowler, Ph.D., and Kimberly Reiter, Ph.D.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\">Fellows teach three or four classes a year, and reduce the teaching load for their colleagues in the academic department. They also get to experience teaching at a liberal arts college and can participate in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/brown-center\/fellowships\/brown-innovation-fellows-program\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Brown Innovation Fellows Program<\/span><\/a>, the center\u2019s signature development opportunity for Stetson faculty that immerses them in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/2017\/02\/brown-innovation-fellows-inspired-to-learn\/\"><span class=\"s2\">a yearlong journey<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of hands-on experiences and meaningful discussions about teaching and learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The job description for the Brown Teacher-Scholar position was very appealing, said Roberson, the new visiting assistant professor in Health Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey had an approach, or a philosophy, of maintaining not only the research end of your profession but also the teaching aspect and the aspect of working with the community, via the Wellness Center,\u201d said Roberson, adding that his father-in-law and brother-in-law are alumni of Stetson College of Law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was really the only position and the only university that I saw that had a position as a postdoctoral fellow that encompassed all of those<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0things.
