Call for Proposals: 2019 Faculty Resource Network Symposium

2019 FRN National Symposium: Critical Conversations and the Academy

When: November 22-23, 2019
Where: Miami, Florida
Submission Deadline: April 22, 2019

Conversation has always been at the core of education. Discussion-based seminars, in which students develop their critical thinking through thoughtful dialogue, serve as a paradigm for learning in higher education. Yet today conversation is increasingly being replaced by contention. Instead of civil discourse and respectful disagreement, we are witnessing a bifurcation of opinion into isolated echo chambers fueled by social media and the 24-hour news cycle. At this critical juncture, we need to ask the following questions: What is the role of the Academy in cultivating conversations on campus and in the classroom? How can our teaching provide students with models of productive conversations?

Visit the Faculty Resource Network for symposium details and submission instructions.

This panel brings together some of the country’s boldest campaign finance reformers for a vibrant discussion on how to connect our current constitutional moment and the prospect of a new progressive majority on the U.S. Supreme Court with innovative new initiatives for ending big money’s dominance of American elections.

Big change has already been set in motion right here in Pinellas County, as the St. Petersburg City Council is currently considering a first-of-its-kind ordinance that would abolish super PACs and limit foreign corporate money in St. Pete elections. The ordinance, if adopted, would directly challenge the decision that created super PACS — SpeechNow.org v. FEC — and could even roll back Citizens United.

FEATURED PANELISTS

Professor Al Alschuler, University of Chicago Law School
Scott Greytak, Counsel, Free Speech For People
Darden Rice, Vice Chair, St. Petersburg City Council
Commissioner Ellen Weintraub, Federal Election Commission

Moderated by Professor Joseph Morrissey, Stetson University College of Law.

November 18-19, 2016
Teaching a New Generation of Students
Atlanta, GA
Register online before October 27th

The college classroom of the future will become more diverse than ever in our history. Are colleges and universities prepared to educate increasing numbers of historically under-represented students? In what ways will increased student diversity influence classroom conversations, or the types of courses offered within the curriculum? How will faculty members respond to students with varied backgrounds and experiences that may differ from their own? How can colleges and universities promote the retention, progress, and success of first-generation students? The 2016 FRN National Symposium will examine these questions by drawing on our collective expertise as scholars, educators, practitioners, and administrators.
