{"id":1876,"date":"2018-10-01T16:20:37","date_gmt":"2018-10-01T16:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/fsem\/?p=985"},"modified":"2018-10-01T16:20:37","modified_gmt":"2018-10-01T16:20:37","slug":"stetson-announces-four-academic-appointments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/2018\/10\/01\/stetson-announces-four-academic-appointments\/","title":{"rendered":"Stetson Announces Four Academic Appointments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stetson recently announced four new academic appointments designed to enrich students\u2019 academic experiences, help them compete for elite scholarships and fellowships, and help the university plan for the expansion of science programs.<\/p>\n<p>Noel Painter, Ph.D., Stetson Executive Vice President and Provost, announced the appointments for three current faculty members and a one-year special appointment of an outside academic advisor.<\/p>\n<p>The appointments include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_33383\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tim-Elgren5-155x200.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tim-Elgren5-155x200.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tim-Elgren5-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tim-Elgren5-309x400.jpg 309w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tim-Elgren5-464x600.jpg 464w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tim-Elgren5.jpg 1200w\" alt=\"portrait seated at a desk\" width=\"155\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim Elgren, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Tim Elgren<\/strong>, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College, was named Special Advisor on Strategic Initiatives and will lead a study to explore how Stetson can expand programs in the sciences and health sciences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stetson will construct a new science building on the DeLand campus and expand the sciences, thanks to an $18 million donation last spring from longtime Stetson Trustees Cici and Hyatt Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Elgren, who is also a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Oberlin, will serve as Stetson\u2019s special advisor during the 2018-19 academic year while he is on sabbatical from the Ohio college. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/2018\/09\/extending-stetsons-reach\/\">Read a Q&amp;A with Tim Elgren<\/a> as he discusses the yearlong science study.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Megan O\u2019Neill<\/strong>, Ph.D., director of the Writing Program and Jane Heman Language Professor, has been named the Director of the Core Academic Experience. Students should be able to clearly see how they developed key skills and interests while at Stetson, such as mastering writing and research skills, through such courses as the general-education curriculum, First Year Seminar (FSEM) Program, Junior Seminar (JSEM) and Senior Capstone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal for Stetson and our faculty is to ensure that we can provide a four-year education that makes forward progress in connected, integrated ways. That task takes a lot of listening, sharing thinking, and reflecting, which is essential if real change is to be created,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Ranjini Thaver<\/b>, Ph.D., professor of Economics, has been named Director of the First Year\u00a0Seminar Experience. Paramount to facilitating coherence across the arc of the student\u2019s tenure will be purposeful scaffolding of these outcomes to make the nature and reach of skills gained more transparent to the concerned and engaged\u00a0<i>Professional Stetson Hatter<\/i> <em>Graduate<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cI will work with the\u00a0Core Academic Experience Committee to adopt an integrative and interwoven core learning process,\u201d Thaver said. \u201cFor the FSEM program, this means intentionally creating coherence and consistency in a student\u2019s academic learning,\u00a0from admission, into the FSEM, and pulsating all the way through the rest of the curriculum, and ultimately, beyond Stetson.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Grace\u00a0Kaletski-Maisel<\/strong>, M.S., assistant professor and Learning &amp; Information Literacy librarian in the duPont-Ball Library, has been named External Scholarship Advisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_33387\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grace-Kaletski-Maisel-1-161x200.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 161px) 100vw, 161px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grace-Kaletski-Maisel-1-161x200.jpg 161w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grace-Kaletski-Maisel-1-768x953.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grace-Kaletski-Maisel-1-323x400.jpg 323w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grace-Kaletski-Maisel-1-484x600.jpg 484w, https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/today\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Grace-Kaletski-Maisel-1.jpg 1182w\" alt=\"portrait \" width=\"161\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grace Kaletski-Maisel, M.S.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This new position will help students apply for prestigious and competitive scholarship programs, such as Rhodes Scholars, who receive full financial support to pursue a degree at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and Fulbright Scholarships that provide for international graduate study, research or teaching through a worldwide exchange program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of this position is to enhance Stetson\u2019s advising capacity in providing new student research opportunities and promoting competitiveness for elite scholarships, fellowships and awards,\u201d Kaletski-Maisel said. \u201cI\u2019ll be working with faculty to recruit more students who want to compete for distinguished scholarships or who demonstrate promise, working with those students to identify opportunities that fit their individual strengths and interests, and providing support to students and their mentors throughout the award application process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a librarian, I am passionate about connecting students with the information and resources they need to be successful.
