To build capacity as a higher education leader in promoting a\u00a0culture of peace, Stetson University actively confronts and tackles complex global issues while supporting a host of programs and initiatives aimed at raising awareness, understanding, and action.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Poverty & Homelessness<\/h5>\n

Across the globe, the number of school-aged children experiencing poverty and homelessness continues to rise. Stetson’s annual\u00a0Poverty & Homelessness Conference<\/a>\u00a0explores strategies for reducing povery and homelessness in local and global communities.<\/p>\n

Water and the Environment<\/h5>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Environmental Science & Studies Program<\/a>\u00a0equips students with skills and competencies to address complex environmental problems\u00a0and make sound\u00a0decisions to protect natural resources.\u00a0Stetson’s Institute for Water and Envrionmental Resilience<\/a> focuses\u00a0on water and environmental research to offer policy options to protect natural resources in Central Florida and beyond. At the College of Law, the Institute for Biodiversity and Law<\/a>\u00a0serves as an interdisciplinary focal point for education, research and service activities related to global, regional and local biodiversity issues.<\/p>\n

Food<\/h5>\n

Stetson University has long pursued diverse activities and projects around food deserts and sustainable food systems. Toward launching an innovative, interdisciplinary program in Sustainable Food Systems, Stetson is seeking a\u00a0Brown Visiting Teacher-Scholar Fellow in Sustainable Food Systems with expertise in food policy, food justice, community\u00a0health and\/or urban and innovative food production systems. The annual\u00a0Food Forum<\/a>\u00a0focuses on student access to fresh and locally-grown food, growing food with environmental responsibility and sustainability, and reducing food waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Peace Corps is a service opportunity for motivated changemakers to immerse themselves in a community abroad, working side by side with local leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges of our generation. Peace Corps Prep<\/a>\u00a0builds several competencies for integrating Stetson students\u2019 coursework with hands-on experience and professional development in preparation for the Peace Corps volunteer opportunity.<\/p>\n

Advocacy<\/h5>\n

Stetson’s\u00a0Center for Excellence in Advocacy<\/a> <\/a>promotes the continuing development of unparalleled advocacy skills through teaching, scholarship and research.\u00a0Stetson Law has consistently ranks first in the nation for trial advocacy by U.S. News and World Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Veterans<\/h5>\n

The\u00a0Veterans Law Institute’s<\/a>\u00a0 mission is to increase legal services available to the growing population of military members, veterans and their families in the Tampa Bay area. The center also offers services to\u00a0current and prospective students who are active or retired service members.<\/p>\n

HIGHER EDUCATION<\/h5>\n

As a vehicle of global citizenship, higher education brings people of disparate experiences and backgrounds together to explore and dialogue across similarities and differences and build shared understanding (not necessarily agreement) and broadening of perspectives.<\/p>\n

Stetson offers several academic programs in area studies that span the globe. The\u00a0Africana Studies<\/a> program examines the experiences, history and civilizations, intellectual and economic development, social organization and cultures of the peoples of Africa on the continent and in the Diaspora. Asian Studies<\/a> explore histories, businesses, politics, economies, religions, cultures, and languages, and an understanding and appreciation of Asia. The\u00a0Latin American Studies\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0program brings attention to the region’s social, cultural, political and economic systems. Stetson’s Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies\u00a0<\/a>focuses on\u00a0the territory, peoples, history, languages and cultural practices of the Eurasian landmass from a multidisciplinary perspective. Finally, the Global Development Program<\/a>\u00a0investigates causes, consequences, and possible solutions to underdevelopment and poverty evident in developing countries.<\/p>\n

World Languages and Cultures<\/a>\u00a0promotes foreign language learning as vital to globalization and intercultural and linguistic perspectives. The Department of History<\/a>\u00a0offers courses and research that cover time periods from ancient to modern and regions around the globe.\u00a0International Business<\/a> focuses on\u00a0leadership and managerial roles in companies working across national borders and the prestigious Roland George Investment Program<\/a> manages a real international portfolio comprising $3.5 million in stocks and bonds.<\/p>\n

Stetson’s Adult Degree Completion Program<\/a> in organizational leadership recognizes the complexity and diversity of learning timelines for adult learners and disruption to degree progress. The hybrid program is\u00a0designed for working professionals to finish their college degrees for\u00a0success in the global marketplace.<\/p>\n

International Exchange<\/h5>\n

Formalized international exchange takes Stetson’s teacher-scholars to the world and brings foreign scholars to Stetson University. Faculty Exchange promotes teaching, study, and research in foreign countries. Visiting scholars (both U.S. and foreign) bring niche global expertise and knowledge to Stetson’s teaching and research repertoire. At Stetson, the\u00a0Fulbright Scholars<\/a>\u00a0program takes faculty abroad to teach and conduct research while University administrators engage in seminars to learn more about international and intercultural learning. Stetson’s international language scholars, Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants<\/a> and ALLEX Fellows<\/a>, support Stetson’s language program by bringing native language teachers with cultural expertise to the classroom. The Faculty-Led \u00a0Study Abroad<\/a> program aspires to develop global citizenship and intercultural competency through immersive high-impact educational practices abroad. WORLD Class Travel Awards<\/a> promote faculty international study and exploration while Summer Grants<\/a> boost faculty research and expertise in the U.S. and abroad.<\/p>\n

MUSIC AND THE ARTS<\/h5>\n

Music and the arts, as international languages of peace and harmony, are championed by Stetson’s School of Music<\/a>\u00a0and the Creative Arts<\/a>. \u00a0Educating musicians for the stage and the classroom since 1936, the School of Music boasts\u00a0bands, orchestras, choirs, and opera that are award-winning and critically-acclaimed both at home and abroad. The Creative Arts<\/a> at Stetson span studio, digital, theatrical and art history, producing advocates and artist-scholars who see themselves as members of a global community, as well as citizens of their respective nations and cultures.<\/p>\n
