This year&#8217;s event investigated immigration from the lenses of education, laws and policy, economy and business, identity, and the immigrant experience. The two-week event brought the world to Stetson University to grapple with borders and difference through\u00a0diverse presentations ranging from panel presentations to creative expression. Most events offered Cultural Credit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Opening Panel: Global Citizenship Symposium\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em> (Special session during the Colloquium on Teaching &amp; Learning Innovation)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1478\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Opening-Panel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3617\" height=\"1217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Opening-Panel.jpg 3617w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Opening-Panel-300x101.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Opening-Panel-768x258.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Opening-Panel-1024x345.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This panel session marked the launch of the Global Citizenship Symposium on Immigration, a multi-day interdisciplinary series of events exploring a topic of highly charged political debates and a site of crucial struggles for human and civil rights. <\/span><strong>Dr. Jelena Petrovic<\/strong><\/span>, assistant professor of communication and media studies, and <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paula Hentz<\/span><\/strong>, director of international learning, discussed the need for placing immigration at the core of Stetson University\u2019s commitment to global citizenship by developing systematic initiatives and resources for addressing the needs of immigrants in the campus community.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Campus Screening and Discussion of \u201cIndivisible\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/74413249\">Trailer<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1458\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Indivisible.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Indivisible.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Indivisible-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hcc-offm.org\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Hope<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\">CommUnity<\/span> <span style=\"color: #008000;\">Center<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>, the Deland Campus community viewed the documentary <span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Indivisible: Love Knows No Borders&#8221;<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #339966;\">. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">The film follows\u00a0Renata, Evelyn, and Antonio who were young children when their parents brought them to the U.S. in search of a better life; they were teenagers when their mothers, fathers, and siblings were deported. Today, they are known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/archive\/frequently-asked-questions\">Dreamers<\/a>. Frustrated with the stalled legislative process, the trio take matters into their own hands and petition for a special waiver that would allow them to leave the U.S to visit their families\u2014and legally return. The screening was followed by discussion with\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>Evelyn Rivera<\/b><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>activist and one of the main protagonists featured in the documentary. Rivera discussed the experience of participating in the documentary as well as challenges she and the others featured in the documentary experienced as they were fighting for immigration reform while undocumented.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Acirema Interactive Simulation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1474\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ACIREMA-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3269\" height=\"2613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ACIREMA-1.jpg 3269w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ACIREMA-1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ACIREMA-1-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/ACIREMA-1-1024x819.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Acirema<\/em>, \u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">America spelled backwards, is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">an immigration simulation game designed to expose participants to the hurdles foreigners face when the come to the USA as to study abroad as students. Acerima was presented by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>WORLD Ambassadors <\/b><\/span>and the <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>Muslim Students Association<\/b><\/span>. Any domestic student interested in learning more about the study abroad experience of Stetson&#8217;s international community was invited to participate. During the simulation, ambassadors and MSA students played roles as immigration officers, college admission officers, bankers, language proficiency examiners, \u00a0and more, to construct an authentic learning experience for participants. Each domestic student took on the role of a foreign student in order to to\u00a0learn how to independently\u00a0navigate the admissions and immigration process at an American college\u00a0college.\u00a0 Acirema is commonly used by international educators to encourage understanding and empathy for foreign students and employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Exhibit on Immigrant Art and Literature<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the course of two days, students, faculty, and staff viewed and reflected on selected artwork and poetry about and by immigrants. \u00a0Hosted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.stetson.edu\/library\/\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>duPont Ball Library<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, exhibits featured the works of artists from other parts of the country as well as Stetson students\u2019 poetry. Each artistic piece invited readers to think about struggle, discrimination, and invisibility of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Children\u2019s Literature and Immigration<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Workshop<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1554\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Strebel-and-Oslick-2018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"457\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Strebel-and-Oslick-2018.jpg 457w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Strebel-and-Oslick-2018-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During this interactive session, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Dr.\u00a0Carine Strebel <\/strong><\/span>and<span style=\"color: #008000;\"> <strong>Dr. Mary Ellen Oslick<\/strong> <\/span>shared\u00a0children\u2019s books and books written for young adolescent readers that depict immigrants\u2019 reasons for leaving their home country, their at time perilous journey to a better life, and their\u00a0stories of arrival and integration into the new environment. They discussed the benefits of (multi)culturally responsive literature for students, shared tips for evaluating and selecting multicultural literature, and facilitated a\u00a0\u201ctabletop\u00a0twitter\u201d activity in which the audience examined books and then shared\u00a0personal experiences and insights gained through hashtags, a tweet on paper, a quote, or a quote.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Arepas, Tacos, and More: Foodways of the Latin America Diaspora<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1466\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4019\" height=\"2245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3.jpg 4019w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3-1024x572.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During this popular symposium event, <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Dr. Ana Servigna<\/span><\/strong>, visiting assistant profesor of anthropology, adjunct professor <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Maria Servigna<\/span><\/strong>, and students <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Valeria Servigna<\/strong><\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Angelica Martinez,<\/span><\/strong> shared information about Latin American culinary traditions that are currently influencing the U.S. gastronomic scene. Arepas are a type of food made of ground maize dough or cooked flour prominent in the cuisine of Colombia and Venezuela. Shankar-Brown laid the foundation by reviewing <a href=\"https:\/\/peacemaker.un.org\/document-search\"><em>The UN Peace Accord<\/em> <\/a>and the history of its creation while Graves and Lewis presented a recap of Stetson&#8217;s response to the UN Call for Peace over the past two years.\u00a0 Comments and suggestions from the audience will frame Stetson&#8217;s 2018 Peace Day activities. #000000;\"> globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Undocumented Students\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Workshop<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this workshop facilitated by the <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hcc-offm.org\/\">Hope CommUnity Center<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, audience members learned more about the personal stories of undocumented citizens in the Central Florida community.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>WORLD Fair<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents, faculty and staff basked in the beautiful sunshine surrounded by the sights, sounds, and delicious foods and where they highlighted information about their home country, provided samples of traditional food, and informed guests on immigration statistics. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Eman Elsayed Eltaher Mahmoud Abdelhalim<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant and Arabic instructor at Stetson, showed participants how to spell their names in Arabic and dressed women in traditional garb.<\/span><\/span> Attendees learned about different immigrant populations in the US, where they settle, why they immigrated, and where else in the world they tend to go.\u00a0 Countries represented included Australia, Brazil, Estonia, Italy, Japan,\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Mexico,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Serbia,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Venezuela, the UK, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Lifting Our Lamps: Protecting the Human Rights of Refugee and Migrant Individuals, Families, and Children<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone
