To that end, the Center launched <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/faculty-resources\/\">WORLD Class<\/a><\/em>, a comprehensive campu<span style=\"color: #000000;\">s internationalization initiative aimed at elevating Stetson\u2019s core value of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/global-citizenship\/\">Global Citizenship<\/a>&nbsp;as paramount to student success. This 2018 Impact Report highlights pr<\/span>ogress of the&nbsp;WORLD Class initiative since academic year 2014-15.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP INSTITUTIONAL VALUE<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nStetson University aspires to establish itself as a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/the-global-citizen\/\">global citizen<\/a>, known for innovative and inclusive approaches to&nbsp;address and tackle complex global challenges and expand its identity beyond place.&nbsp;As one of three core <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/about\/mission-and-values.php\">institutional values<\/a>, &nbsp;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">the University&nbsp;prepares students to be informed, active, and engaged citizens of both local communities and the world. Stetson&#8217;s foundational goal is to become a diverse community of inclusive excellence, a commitment to global community engagement, diversity and inclusion, environmental responsibility, and social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To contribute to raising the institution&#8217;s global citizenship profile, WORLD launched the&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/recap-2018-inaugural-global-citizenship-symposium\/\">Global Citizenship Symposium<\/a> in April 2018 aimed at bringing the S<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">tetson community and broader communities together to grapple with and implement viable collaborative actions to global issues of local and regional significance.&nbsp;Events included interdisciplinary panels, workshops, exhibits, film screenings, and other interactive activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1466\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4019\" height=\"2245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3.jpg 4019w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arepas-3-1024x572.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Since 2015, <\/span>WORLD Fair has engaged over 150 elementary school students per year to learn about other countries and motivate them to study abroad or travel overseas as young adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1523\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1F502144-1C84-4B19-9298-5323EC8FC717.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1F502144-1C84-4B19-9298-5323EC8FC717.jpeg 4032w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1F502144-1C84-4B19-9298-5323EC8FC717-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1F502144-1C84-4B19-9298-5323EC8FC717-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1F502144-1C84-4B19-9298-5323EC8FC717-1024x768.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>LEADERSHIP &amp; STRUCTURE<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/staff\/\">WORLD Organizational Chart<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paula Hentz<\/strong>&nbsp;has provided administrative leadership of WORLD: The David and Leighan Rinker Center for International Learning&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">and campus internationalization initiatives since 2015. As <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/staff\/\">senior international officer<\/a> for Stetson&#8217;s DeLand campus, Hentz is principal advisor to Stetson&#8217;s executive leaders on comprehensive campus internationalization. <strong>Roxanne Lewis&#8217; <\/strong>role as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/staff\/\">International Student and Scholar Services Coordinator<\/a> ensures students&#8217;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">federal regulations <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">compliance as well as cultural services and programs to enrich international student and scholars&#8217; cultural and social adjustment. In January 2018, WORLD hired <strong>Wendy Viggiano<\/strong>&nbsp;to serve as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/staff\/\">Program Coordinator of International Learning<\/a>. Viggiano supports the development, planning, and implementation of faculty led and study abroad programs, supervises the WORLD Student Ambassadors and works closely with various departments on campus to increase awareness and participation in global learning initiatives including Peace Corps Prep program.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After a two-year hiatus, the <em>International Learning Council<\/em> has been re-envisioned to focus on the direction of international learning at Stetson.&nbsp;The director of international learning, who provides oversight of WORLD, serves as an <em>ad hoc council&nbsp;<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">member.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to the generosity of several donors, including the <em>Rinker Foundatio<\/em>n, Stetson University received new funds to endow student and faculty engagement in international&nbsp; learning, including study abroad. Some resources were earmarked for student scholarship.s for international learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The new&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/dashboard\/\">Global Community Engagement Dashboard<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;was designed to enhance Stetson University\u2019s comprehensive&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">internationalization efforts and position the University for<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">pportunity planning around international and intercultural learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.powerbi.com\/view?r=eyJrIjoiMWMzNmU4MTQtMmE2Ni00ZGExLTk1NWYtZWFmNjhiMzRhZjUxIiwidCI6IjdkODU0NjU5LTQyMTMtNDhjMS04MGNhLWRmNzgzMWMwMmU2ZCIsImMiOjF9\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1732 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/PowerBI-300x158.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/PowerBI-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/PowerBI.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>CURRICULUM &amp; CO-CURRICULUM<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Internationalizing curriculum and co-curriculum at Stetson is ensure that all students are exposed to international perspectives and build global competence. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">General education requirements<\/span>:&nbsp;<\/em><\/span>WORLD supports foreign language courses through its international language scholars&#8217; program and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">exchange students from countries such as Kyrgyzstan. Since 2014, nine (9) Fulbright and ALLEX <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/new-international-instructors-boost-language-offerings-at-stetson\/\">fellows<\/a> have facilitated&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Arabic, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese courses. At least four (4) international exchange students have supported language acquisition skills in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Stetson&#8217;s foreign language lab. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Student learning outcomes<\/em><\/span>:&nbsp;A<\/span>fter a two-year hiatus, the International Learning Council has been re-envisioned to focus on the direction of international learning at Stetson.&nbsp;The director of international learning, who provides oversight of WORLD, serves as an <em>ad hoc&nbsp;<\/em>committee<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">member. The Committee will develop &nbsp;clear learning outcomes to help students develop and articulate skills and dispositions addressed in courses, programs, activities, and co-curricula experiences. The committee investigate programs and activities address global issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Internationalized courses in the disciplines<\/span>:<\/em>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">WORLD has worked to develop new study abroad courses which complement and enhance the curriculum. &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">In 2017-2018, WORLD helped to facilitate 12 faculty-led academic programs abroad.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> &nbsp;For example, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">tudents were also able to study Spanish language and Latin American Studies on a month-long program in Ecuador.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> &nbsp;O<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">n the faculty-led program in Scotland, students <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">were<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> able to receive credit towards the general education requirements in the School of Business, while also receiving practical hands-on experience by working on a consulting project with local Scottish businesses.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">WORLD has also contributed to faculty development around the internationalization of courses and programs. &nbsp;Since AY 2014-15, WORLD has <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">given 34 awards to faculty to support their development around international topics and to encourage them to internationalize their classes and offer new programs abroad.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;WORLD also offers monthly Lunch and Learn discussions during the spring semester, which brings faculty together to talk about ways to internationalize campus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Co-curriculum:&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stetson.edu\/other\/peace-corps-prep\/index.php\">Peace Corps Prep<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">program prepares cohorts of students for international development fieldwork and potential Peace Corps service.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Each student enrolls in three courses that correlate with their chosen sector (<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">education, health, environment, youth in development, and community economic development), three introspective courses to learn about others while reflecting on self in relation to others, and actions to better the welfare of others.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The fall 2017 cohort enrolled six (6) students. Two graduates enrolled in the Peace Corps service in summer 2018. &nbsp;During spring 2018, Stetson enrolled a new cohort of 12 students to the program. &nbsp;At least two students intend to apply enter Peace Corps service upon graduation in 2019.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Technology<\/span>:<\/em>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">WORLD<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;collaborated with&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Information Technology to transition and upgrade the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terradotta.com\/\">Terra Dotta<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;database software<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">. The updated system allows the WORLD staff to better monitor program applications, student inquiries, and has an easier interface for our students, faculty, and staff usage.&nbsp; The upgrade has provided the opportunity to make more dynamic program pages that are appealing and easier to navigate.&nbsp;WORLD plans to continue updating existing pages and applications to the newer format for a streamlined look.&nbsp; In addition to ease of navigation and appearance, the log in process is simplified and users can log in using their Stetson ID and password versus a self-created password and login.&nbsp; By combining the Stetson data with Terra Dotta data, we are able to pull more accurate demographics and additional data about our applicants for a better understanding of the types of students applying to our programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"content\">\n<article role=\"main\">\n<div id=\"layout\"><span style=\"color: #008000; font-size: inherit;\">International Student Mobility &#8211; Enrollment &amp; Retention<\/span><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2010, international students accounted for roughly 6% of the total undergraduate population. By 2017, the international population had increased by 54% , rising slightly to 6.5% of students and in step with increased undergraduate student enrollment overall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1670\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Study-Abroad-growth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Study-Abroad-growth.png 413w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Study-Abroad-growth-287x300.png 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>B<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">etween 2014 and 2016, retention of first-year international students rose dramatically from 76% to 86% in response to intentional WORLD services and student programs. From a fiscal perspective, increased retention translated to an economic impact on Stetson University and Volusia County of $6.5 million in FY 2016-2017 alone (Institute of International Education, 2017).&nbsp;<\/span>As&nbsp;of fall 2017, Stetson enrolled 206 international students from six continents and 64 countries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1662\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Map-of-WORLD-students.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Map-of-WORLD-students.jpg 701w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Map-of-WORLD-students-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Student Mobility &#8211; Study Abroad&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\nOver the past five years, domestic and international student participation in study abroad increased nearly 50% (<em>below<\/em>), due to strategic marketing of study away experiences, increased number of exchange partnerships, and a rise in faculty-led programs.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1671\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Study-Abroad-growth-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Study-Abroad-growth-1.png 640w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Study-Abroad-growth-1-300x259.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Scholarships for International Learning<\/span><br \/>\nThe doubling of study abroad scholarship applications over the past two academic years (<em>below)<\/em> reflects increased student awareness and interest in study abroad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1669\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scholarships-growth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scholarships-growth.png 529w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Scholarships-growth-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>FACULTY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nStetson University strives to implement policies and support mechanisms to ensure that faculty have opportunities to develop international and intercultural competence to optimize impact on student learning.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Institutional Procedures &#8211; Review &amp; Approval of Faculty-Led Courses Abroad<\/span><br \/>\nStetson University offers Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs over the course of the academic year, ranging from winter and&nbsp;Spring Break offerings to courses over multiple weeks during May-July. In 2015, WORLD implemented a formal<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/faculty-resources\/\"> review and approval process<\/a> to&nbsp;execute internal and external logistics for programming and budgeting, , identify and forecast risk and risk management protocols, apply protocols and policies to ensure student safety and security; integrate standards for high-impact engagement abroad; align student learning outcomes and teaching learning outcomes with geographically\/culturally-appropriate&nbsp;locations; evaluate elements of global learning using best practice frameworks.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Faculty Mobility &#8211; Grants for Professional Development Abroad<\/span><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/programs\/international-learning\/ifds\/\">WORLD Class Travel Awards Program<\/a> provides grants for faculty travel to countries abroad to impact student intercultural learning. Introduced in Fall 2014, awards support travel for international faculty development seminars, exploratory travel to design courses\/programs, and conferences or performances. The first awards supported travel to Tanzania in January 2014. The program has become a significant and expanding outcome of the initiative and key to the substantial increase in faculty-led study abroad programs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1672\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WORLD-Class-Awards-graph.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"632\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WORLD-Class-Awards-graph.png 632w, https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/WORLD-Class-Awards-graph-300x215.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">On-campus Professional Development &#8211;&nbsp;Lunch &amp; Learn Series<\/span><br \/>\n<em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.stetson.edu\/faculty-engagement\/2014\/10\/130\/\">WORLD Class Lunch &amp;&nbsp;Learn<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;series features&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">faculty, staff and other experts in the fields of international outreach, research, learning, and development.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">&nbsp;Each luncheon highlights a topic of interest in global learning for faculty and staff to share, learn, and help shape the direction of international learning and intercultural competence at Stetson University. Since spring 2015, WORLD has hosted 10 luncheons on topjcs&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>PARTNERSHIPS &amp; EXCHANGE AGREEMENTS<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nStetson University has a long and rich tradition of partnerships with institutions and organizations across the globe. Establsihing and maintating these relationships contributes to the Stetson&#8217;s academic repetore (teaching and reach) and outreach missions, supported by WORLD in the service of student, faculty, staff and organizational learning.
