Max Weber on Traditionalism

Max Weber describes traditional action as both irrational and intelligible. But how is it possible that an irrational action can nevertheless be intelligible?  I argue that Weber scholars have failed to give a satisfactory answer to this question and I propose a novel account of traditional action. This account of traditional action illuminates Weber’s account of traditional authority.
