*Reminder* Lost History Week Sessions

Slavery and the Struggle for Freedom in East Florida
March 16, 2021, 6pm – 8:00pm

In this presentation, Dr. Andy Eisen, co-director of the Community Education Project (CEP) and a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Stetson University, will share research on slavery and Indian removal in Volusia County conducted by incarcerated students. After screening a brief documentary film, Unsilenced: Rewriting History from Prison, Dr. Eisen will address violent erasures of settler colonialism that shape the public understanding of this region, share stories of Black and indigenous people who lived, labored, and struggled for freedom in East Florida, and reflect on the radical potential of collaborative community-based public history research.

An exhibit created by incarcerated researchers will be on display at the Enterprise Museum in February and March 2021. The museum is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 am – 2 pm. For a private tour, contact Cindy Sullivan at 386-804-6987.

Creating Wilderness Selective Memorial
March 18, 2021, 6pm – 8:00pm

In this presentation, Dr. Tony Abbott, Professor of Environmental Science and Studies at Stetson University, will share William Bartram’s naturalist explorations and experiences with people encountered in the late 1700s in Volusia County. William Bartram, one of America’s first naturalists, came to West Volusia County 255 years ago with his father and alone in 1774. This lecture tells the story of his encounters with the culture of Native and Black residents. 

An exhibit, including images generously provided by the Bartram Trail Society, will be on display at the Enterprise Museum for all of March 2021. The museum is open Thursdays,  and Saturdays from 10 am – 2 pm. For a private tour, contact Cindy Sullivan at 386-804-6987.

Virtual History Tour March 20, 2021 1:00 pm – 4:00pm

The Tour will consist of 4 parts. Cindy Sullivan, Curator of the Enterprise Museum will present a brief overview and history of the Museum. Maggie Ardito, President, and co-founder of the St Johns River-to-Sea Loop Alliance will discuss the Nature and History Corridor project and illustrate with maps of regional trails and their access to historical points of interest. Dr. Andy Eisen of Stetson University will present the exhibits related to “Slavery and the Struggle for Freedom in East Florida”. Dr. Tony Abbott of Stetson University will present the exhibits related to William Bartram’s travels and his lecture on “Creating Wilderness”.
